Research

The underlying theme of the Institute’s Research Program is to develop and evaluate techniques and programs that reduce bear human conflict situations and which ensure the maximum effectiveness of existing programs is achieved. This is done with the support of government wildlife managing agencies and local communities. This area of work provides government wildlife managers an opportunity to consider alternative methods to managing “problem bears” through science-based research.

Current Research Projects underway

1.KBSIC is currently sponsoring a graduate student examining the effectiveness of Aversive Conditioning, an alternative technique to manage "problem" grizzly bears in Alberta.

2. KBSIC has compiled a Bear Hazard Assessment in conjunction with the Alberta government for Canmore, Alberta and the surrounding Bow Valley lands east of Banff National Park.

3. KBSIC, in partnership with the Alberta Conservation Association, insituted a "Bear Resistant Container Loaner Program"  for the community of Bragg Creek and area in 2006 in an effort to reduce incidents of bear human conflict relates to unnatural foods. This program has been extended to the MD of Foothills in 2008 through the support of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and Y2Y.

4. KBSIC is in the process of completing a Bear Hazard Assessment for Bragg Creek, Alberta for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development as part of the provinces' ongoing Alberta BearSmart Program initiative.
